Sight words do get a bad rap, in a world where phonics rule. Indeed one of the arguments against the method was heightened by my then five year old son, who rather defiantly told me that there was no point in him reading/learning the list of sight words. They were dumb – just a list of words, with no meaning. Boring–who cares anyway?
And I had to agree, wholeheartedly!! Reading is about meaning. If there is no meaning, there is no purpose. From that moment on, any sight word list brought home, was immediately used in a sentence. There had to be meaning.
Take a look at this footage – this moment really shows how reading gives meaning!
This little one enrolled at BORN2READ at the age of four. Her journey has been remarkable, and her ability to read is fantastic!! All this was based largely on the mastery of sight words!
I have the best job in the world!
Cheers!
