Reading Tips – 3 to 4 year olds
Hello and welcome to born2read! My name is Katrina Casey and I want your child to read!!
After teaching in primary schools for just over twenty years, it has become even more apparent to me, that the most optimum time to teach young children to read, is:
before they get to school!
Most parents read daily to their children and that is a great start. However, this alone will not teach every child to read – if it did, more than 80% of children would arrive at school, already reading. Sadly, this is not the case. In most Year One classrooms, only 1 or 2 children can already read when they begin.
So what can you do as parents or caregivers? Start early and begin to
teach your child to read!
From my experiences with teaching children, I have devised the following products that will help you teach your child to read. This month, I will focus on the three to four year old age group.
Three to four Year Olds:
This is a wonderful time to begin to teach your child the meaning of words. They love your attention and love discovering new things. They also learn through repetition.
Picture Sight Words Packs have been designed to teach your child to read the names of everyday objects and things. The pictures are of objects that young children have experienced in everyday life, in books and DVDs, or on television. The picture and word side helps associate the word with the picture to match on a bigger card. The more familiar children become with the picture and word, the quicker they are able to read the word only side.
Alphabet Match is designed to teach your child the letters of the alphabet and the more common sounds they make when at the beginning of a word.
Alphabet Frieze is a great product for you to hang in your child’s room. This product helps children become familiar with the letters of the alphabet. Ask your child to point to different letters, or to tell you what letter begins the word ‘pigs’ or ‘penguins’.
Just a reminder too, all born2read products come with instructions and tips for parents to help you teach your child to read!
